Bokashi composting bin: comparison of BO1 and BOE

Unless you've been living under a rock, you probably know that a quality bokashi composting bin is the key to practically and adequately managing kitchen waste. With this indoor composter, households collect their organic waste and convert it into new resources in the comfort of their kitchen. Moreover, the bokashi composting method is, in fact, fermentation. This means it is an anaerobic process. As such, a quality bokashi composting bin ensures airtight conditions. Hence, the bokashi process produces 20 times fewer greenhouse gas emissions than traditional composting. Furthermore, there are no unpleasant smells and no pests related to this user-friendly kitchen waste solution.

Quality bokashi composting bin is the key to practically and adequately managing kitchen wasteAt Skaza, we've been producing top-notch bokashi composting bins for years, starting with our legacy Bokashi Organko 1 (BO1) model. However, the latest addition to our line of indoor composters is a bokashi composting bin called Bokashi Organko Essential or BOE. The latter combines the efficiency and practicality of BO1 and tops it with a stylish, modern design. Plus, it is fully produced from post-consumer recycled plastics. Moreover, to ensure that this new kitchen composter is as efficient as BO1, we performed a controlled and logged in-house experiment before officially launching this product. And we'll look at that experiment's results shortly. However, let's first cover the specs of the two bins.

Bokashi composting bin: BO1 and BOE specs

The BO1 bokashi composting bin is a 32-by-26-by-38-centimeter more-or-less rectangular bin. It has a volume of 16 liters and weighs 1.94 kilograms. It comes with an ergonomic handle, an airtight lid, a tap, a draining sieve, a dodge container for bokashi bran, and a drainer cup to collect the bokashi liquid. For a more detailed showcase of Bokashi Organko 1, visit the Bokashi Organko website.

Unlike BO1, BOE is a cylindrical bokashi composting bin with 35.4-by-28.2-by-31.45-centimeter dimensions. Moreover, with its capacity set at 15.3 liters, it is just slightly smaller than BO1. Furthermore, BOE is noticeably lighter, weighing just 1.12 kilograms. As far as the parts go, BOE also comes with an ergonomic handle, an airtight lid, a tap, a draining sieve, a dosage container, a presser, and a drainer cup. Nonetheless, it also includes an optional base, making using BOE in the garden much easier. For a more detailed showcase of Bokashi Organko Essential, visit the Bokashi Organko website.

As mentioned above, before officially launching BOE, we performed an in-house experiment to ensure that this new bokashi composting bin was as effective and efficient as BO1. Hence, we used the same type and amount of common kitchen waste in both bins. We mainly focused on fruit and veggie peels. Finally, our experiment was underway with both indoor composters filled with the same organic material and the same amount of bokashi bran. And while our primary goal was to focus on the fermentation process, we also took notes on the user-friendliness of the new bokashi composition bin. All-in-all, here are the key takeaways from our experiment conducted at the beginning of Spring 2022:

  • Most importantly, we were able to confirm that BOE ensures that the fermentation process of organic waste is successful. Essentially, the resulting bokashi fermentation liquid and the bokashi cake were very similar to these bokashi composting products from BO1.
  • With our experiment, we were also able to confirm our goal that BOE's oval design makes it somewhat easier to fill the bin with waste. After all, there are no tight corners that make things trickier.
  • Just like BO1, BOE didn't produce any unpleasant smell. Moreover, it produced more or less the same amount of bokashi liquid and fermented mass.
  • We also noted that we could further improve some design details of BOE. As such, we then tweaked the shape of the bokashi composting bin's handle to make it even more ergonomic. We also made sure to improve the bin's sieve and thus ensure it doesn't fall out when emptying the bin.

You can now compost your organic waste in the comfort of your kitchen with a modern-looking bin

The ultimate bokashi composting bin at your disposal

The above-presented in-house experiment confirmed our prediction that BOE is an equally efficient bokashi composting bin as BO1. Moreover, it also reaffirmed our goal of creating a more efficient design. Of course, as a result, you can now compost your organic waste in the comfort of your kitchen with a modern-looking bin. All-in-all, we dare to claim that BOE is the ultimate bokashi composting bin.

Last but not least, to ensure that this bokashi composter meets the needs of all households, we offer BOE in three variations: BOE, BOE+base, and BOE Set + base. To find out which variation is best for your needs, make sure to explore the "Products" section of the Bokashi Organko website.
