Saint-Omer, France: where citizens connected and found the solution for waste

Lately, we've been writing a lot about the problem of waste, particularly food and organic waste. Of course, we've also been discussing a reliable solution for waste. Moreover, it's worth pointing out that our goal is to ensure that as many people as possible know that organic waste is one of the leading issues regarding negative environmental, social, and economic impacts. After all, most of it still ends up in landfills where it rots and releases methane, which is 25 times more potent greenhouse gas (GHG) than CO2. As such, organic waste contributes to enhanced global warming.

Furthermore, we (humans) waste about one-third of all food. As such, there are enormous amounts of water and resources wasted that are used to produce food. This costs hundreds of billions of dollars every year. While all that is happening, about 10 % of the world's population is starving. As such, any suitable solution for waste must be set in place today. Of course, the three Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) are a great guideline.

However, the reality is that households continue to produce a lot of organic waste, which can't be recycled per se. Still, it can be repurposed—as such, collecting that waste properly and converting it into new resources is essential. This is where bokashi composting makes a world of difference. Moreover, this is the solution for waste that we are focusing on with our Bokashi Organko composting bins. And this is also the solution for waste that the citizens of Saint-Omer, France, implemented very effectively.

Solution for waste that the citizens of Saint-Omer, implemented very effectively

The key solution for waste in households: bokashi composting

While industrial facilities, restaurants, hotels, and other non-residential facilities also produce a lot of waste, households continue to be the primary source of food waste and organic waste. As such, we must tackle this source first. Moreover, it's much easier to implement a new waste management system on the individual level. Hence, every household needs to be aware that it's its responsibility to properly collect its kitchen waste and other household wastes. By doing so, we can join forces and ensure that entire communities or even municipalities implement the necessary systems.

Moreover, changing laws is another solution for waste. They are forcing us to take more environmentally-friendly actions. As such, we must salute these positive legislative changes and do our best to implement the required solutions. So, whether you want to start composting to be environmentally friendlier or to be in line with the laws, it is the solution for waste that we can't afford to ignore.

By collecting our household organic waste properly, we can start the composting process in the comfort of our kitchens. This is where high-quality indoor composters, such as Bokashi Organko Essential, enter the scene. These user-friendly bins ensure airtight conditions that are essential for the bokashi composting process (fermentation) to take place. Moreover, thanks to this airtightness, there is no bad unpleasant smell or pests related to this sort of kitchen waste management. Furthermore, the bokashi composting produces close to zero GHG emissions.

So, as we collect daily batched of organic waste and sprinkle it with bokashi bran, the fermentation process converts the waste into the bokashi cake and bokashi liquid. Both are nutritious resources that can be the basis for organic gardening and farming. As such, bokashi composting is an essential solution for waste.

Households continue to produce a lot of organic waste

The bokashi solution for waste was implemented in Saint-Omer, France

The Saint-Omer municipality in France is an excellent example of advancing a community by implementing the above-presented solution for waste. In February 2022, the officials of Saint-Omer decided to support their citizens' improvement in handling organic waste. As such, they offered to finance 75 % of the price of Bokashi Organko 2 composting bins for every household that wants to take the lead in proper kitchen waste management. In addition, they also set in place three designated spots where citizens can dispose of their bokashi mass—that way, their pre-fermented mass can be repurposed by gardeners and farmers. Of course, they can also use their bokashi cakes and liquid on their own.

We hope that there will be many more municipalities following Saint-Omer's example. However, the good news is that you don't have to wait for your officials to make a move. Instead, you can implement the bokashi solution for waste today. All you need is one of the Bokashi Organko bins and bokashi bran. Moreover, you can help close the #bokashiloop by getting other households in your community to start responsibly handling their organic waste. Remember, together; we can make a huge difference.
